Materials and Supplies

Artist quality or student grade which to use?  That is the question that has been plaguing me for decades ( maybe only 7 years since I started selling my work on Ebay) . I guess it all depends. I used student grade materials in college and those works have survived and are no worse for the wear(I didn't particularly take care of them as well as I should have).  I stored them in my garage and they still look "good". I mentioned in my last post, redoing my color studies on Strathmore 400 watercolor paper ( I found out they make a even better quality the 500 series) isn't  good enough as far a paper quality goes in the opinion of most  artists ( because it has some wood pulp which can yellow over time).  With four kids and several mortgage payments as well as college tuition coming soon), spending 25+ dollars on paper as opposed to 15 for the same amount of paper is insane. The pieces I produced 20+ years ago in school on less than stellar paper and  paint still look good. In fact the only artist quality item I would recommend getting is graphite pencils( only because they don't make student grade in pencils).  I have had my pencils over 20 years ( some of them) and only replace them when I get bored . So most of my pencils are good shape. I do have a set that I absolutely love and I continue to purchase the same brand when they are too short , but they aren't cheap ($25-30 for the set ).
