Sketch Books

Recently I viewed some  YouTube videos on sketchbooks. For those who aren't familiar with the concept, artist keep sketch books full of ideas for drawing, paintings , layouts etc..
Basically it is a journal. I mean one only gets better at visual  art if you practice and the sketchbook is one the most important ways of doing that. I decided to go through the various sketchbooks I own. Like many artists I have what seems like a million half finished books. Currently I have approximately 15-20 such books.  Most of them are kept in pristine  condition with not much in them. Like most  artists  I collect art supplies and I have way more than I actually use or need ( that has changed somewhat since I started teaching again) now that I don't enter contests anymore ( too busy but I think I am going to get back into it since the first kid is going to college and the other three are not too far behind. )  Anyway ,getting back to the sketchbook, I do have things in my sketchbooks most of the drawings are what I consider crap and they are but that is the point of the sketchbook. Some of the books I saw on YouTube were filled with amazing art. I am going well my sketchbook certainly does not look like that. It is full of half drawn things messed up lines, random brush strokes, half done pictures and just bad drawings.  Nothing like the stuff I put on my Facebook page( until today, well the bad stuff is not up there yet. ). Then I viewed Steve Harpster's( he is a professional cartoonist) video on sketchbooks and he showed his not so great stuff and he was like not everything in your sketchbook is going to be perfect or even good. And you know he was right. So everyday I draw something no matter how good or  bad because I need to fill up my sketchbook.  Remember practice does pay off.
